CarbonCloud

When talking about people and places the first thing that comes to mind is we're all probably much more connected than we know.

To help explore these connections The Carbon Project will roll out CarbonCloud (tm) in the next few months. CarbonCloud is the world's first peer-to-peer (P2P) framework designed to allow people to share and find experiences about places.

That said, there's alot to do and I hope to share some of my thoughts on the concepts of place, experience, connectedness, and to get your thoughts and ideas as well.

There’s actually nothing else like it on the Web because it’s not “on the Web”. Here are some of the differences -

- CarbonCloud is a peer-to-peer (P2P) framework, not a Web application. What this means is that instead of making you share your information to some server and then having other people download it, you can share your favorite places and experiences from one computer to another.

- You can set up your own Groups to share experiences about Places. Once the Group is online and active it connects People who want to get connected, and develops over time as more content is shared.

- CarbonCloud is part of a software development toolkit called CarbonTools PRO, which means software developers can customize it and make their own tools for P2P sharing.

- CarbonCloud (via CarbonTools PRO) lets consumers, businesses and government plug into a variety of maps and other location content from many sources, which means you're not tied to the maps that Google, Yahoo, OGC or Microsoft says you must use...you can use almost anything.

- CarbonCloud/CarbonTools PRO lets you add Notes about Places, customize the look and feel, and then share “packages” of this content with others via P2P.

- CarbonCloud will include simple ways to provide a measure of the “Connectedness” of a Place.

- You can even use all this location content offline.

and many more. We'll try to highlight these over the next few weeks.
